Aristophanes,Jeffrey Henderson: Acharnians / Knights: "Acharnians", "Knights", "Clouds", "Wasps"
Description
Aristophanes of Athens (ca. 446-386 b.c.), one of the world's great comic dramatists, has been admired since antiquity for his wit and fantasy, language, satire of the social, intellectual and political life of Athens at its height. He wrote at least 40 plays, of which 11 have survived complete. In this volume, Jeffrey Henderson presents a newly edited Greek text of two plays and a translation with full explanatory notes for the late 1990s. In "Acharnians" a small landowner, tired of the Peloponnesian War, magically arranges a personal peace treaty and demonstrates the injustice of the war in a contest with the bellicose Acharnians. "Knights" is a political satire. The introduction brings current scholarly insights to bear on the problem of the comic poet as a political force.
For thousands of years, Australian Aborigines have been making art. A manifestation of the creative forces of Dreamtime, art is also a fundamental means of expressing individual and group identity. Howard Morphy surveys the great variety in Aboriginal art, showing the inter-relationships between such diverse art forms as body painting, dance, the decoration of weapons and utensils, and painting on bark and canvas.
"The Fate The World of Null-A download epub of Reason" is the first general history devoted to the period between Kant and Fichte, one of the most revolutionary and fertile in modern philosophy. The philosophers of this time broke with the two central tenets of the modem Cartesian tradition: the authority of reason and the primacy of epistemology. They also witnessed the decline of the Aufkldrung, the completion of Kant's philosophy, and the beginnings of post-Kantian idealism. Thanks to Beiser we can newly appreciate the influence of Kant's critics on the development of his philosophy. Beiser brings the controversies, and the personalities who engaged in them, to life and tells a story that has uncanny parallels with the debates of the present.
